Survive the Night

As of Oct 25th, I have only read three of Riley Sager’s books; however, this has been one of my absolute favorites. This in many ways is a cautionary tale with 90s horror movie tropes. Then again weren’t most horror films of that time cautionary tales? It’s also very clear Sager is a fan of night only horror films but also the Scream Franchise. As a die hard fan of the Scream films there were several times I caught myself saying that quote was used in Scream or that line is very similar to a line used in the films. Case in point the quote I used above Tatum Riley says in Scream, “You’re starting to sound like some Wes Carpenter flick or something…” There is also a scene, actually, the scene that the quote above is used in that plays out very similar to a scene in Scream 3. Overall I thought Sager did a great job of telling this story and I loved those moments that felt really familiar to me.
That said… There was one moment that I wanted to fight Charlie. You know on page 136 when she insulted Batman. Look, the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton films were the best. Don’t make me come for you Charlie. 😂
This is a great novel to read for the spooky season. Definitely recommend.
Now to talk about the photo. Obviously I had to do a photo of a dark road; however, I thought it was fitting to also do a photo in a place where an epic chase scene began and ended in a 90s horror movie. Que the suspense music… This is the alleyway where Helen Shivers is killed in the classic, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” This is also close to where they filmed the new Scream! In 2018 before I was diagnosed with leukemia I made a video comparing the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” book to the movie going to the locations used in the film. I also did a video where I covered the locations used for the epic chase scene. If you’re a fan of the film check out the video.
